{"id":267,"date":"2017-08-01T10:00:27","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T14:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/human-rights-institute\/our-work\/international-migrants-bill-of-rights-initiative\/imbr-tools\/bill-of-rights\/principles\/"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:08:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:08:08","slug":"principles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/human-rights-institute\/scholarship\/scholarship\/international-migrants-bill-of-rights-initiative\/imbr-tools\/principles\/","title":{"rendered":"Principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The International Migrants Bill of Rights Principles<\/h2>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to <strong>dignity<\/strong>, including physical, mental, and moral integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right, without any discrimination, to the<strong> equal protection<\/strong> of the law of any State in which the migrant is present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vulnerable migrants<\/strong>, including children, women, and disabled migrants, have the right to the protection and assistance required by their condition and status and to treatment which takes into account their special needs.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the inherent right to <strong>life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to <strong>liberty and security of person<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to recognition everywhere as a <strong>person before the law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to an <strong>effective remedy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to <strong>due process of law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant <strong>victim of crime<\/strong> has the right to assistance and protection, including access to compensation and restitution.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to protection against discriminatory or arbitrary <strong>expulsion<\/strong> or deportation, including collective expulsion.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries <strong>asylum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right <strong>against refoulement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to a <strong>nationality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant <strong>family<\/strong> has the right to protection by society and the State.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the <strong>right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion or belief<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the <strong>right to freedom of opinion and expression<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the <strong>right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to participate in the <strong>civil and political life<\/strong> of the migrant&#8217;s community and in the conduct of public affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to be <strong>free from slavery<\/strong>, servitude, or forced or compulsory labor.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to <strong>work<\/strong> and to just and favorable conditions of work.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental <strong>health<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to an <strong>adequate standard of living<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to <strong>education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every migrant has the right to enjoy the migrant&#8217;s own <strong>cultures<\/strong> and to use the migrant&#8217;s own languages, either individually or in community with others, and in public or private.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Migrants Bill of Rights Principles Every migrant has the right to dignity, including physical, mental, and moral integrity.
