\/><\/p>\n<h2>Michelle Gulino<\/h2>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 16px\"><span id=\"page3R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Challenging Authoritarianism<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with Bold Legal Advocacy<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Director of the Legal and Programs department of Human Rights Foundation (HRF), a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization that advances civil and political rights exclusively in authoritarian regimes, Michelle Gulino (L&#8217;18) is no stranger to bold campaigns for societal change.<\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle is part of a<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dedicated<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">team that focuses its<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">resources<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">o<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">n closed societies where <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">authoritarian <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">governments<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">penalize<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dissent<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and the space for civil society organizations is extremely limited<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cBecause there is no judicial independence in dictatorships,\u201d Michelle explains, \u201c<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">dissidents, human <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">rights ac<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tivists, and journalists are frequently targeted by the regime, arrested without charge<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">or <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">imprisoned without a fair trial.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Under HRF\u2019s Impact Litigation Program, Michelle and her team<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">bring<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cemblematic cases of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">arbitrarily imprisoned dissidents to sem<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">i<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">judicial international bodies, such as the UN Working <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Group on Arbitrary Detention, to exert pressure on authoritarian regimes to release these <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">individuals.\u201d Michelle and her team also make regular submissions to the UN Human Rights <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Council under its Per<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">iodic Review of the human rights records of all UN Member States, as well as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to relevant UN Special Rapporteurs and other stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The fact that Michelle\u2019s work deals with \u201csoft\u201d international law, without legally binding force, can <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">be frustrating.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">But, she says,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cthis is also why advocacy beyond our legal submissions<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and which <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">captures global attention<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is extremely important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">As part of its mission to provide a platform for<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">human rights activists to share their stories and call <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on the internati<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">onal community<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for support<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">, HRF<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">also hosts an annual human rights conference <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">called the Oslo Freedom Forum. \u201cVery often, the individuals we meet through this incredible <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">network are people we later represent via impact litigation,\u201d says Michelle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Risks and<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Rewards<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle\u2019s job comes with rewarding and difficult moments<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201csometimes in equal measure,\u201d she <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">says. \u201cThe most challenging part is coping with a feeling that you will never be able to do the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">maximum amount of good for the individuals living under authoritar<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ianism<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a number which is <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">over half the global population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Repression of dissidents is pervasive; and the human rights activists<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with whom<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle has worked <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">face arbitrary arrests, detention, kidnappings, torture, extrajudicial killings, and other me<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ans of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">repression. One of the people Michelle\u2019s team represented died while arbitrarily detained; others <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">manage to survive detention but are later targeted again. Additionally, exposure to graphic content <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">relating to the individuals whose rights Michelle w<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">orks to promote and protect means that secondary <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">trauma is a real risk for many people working in this field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page3R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cWe work to provide services that allow activists and others to build a toolkit to effectively <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">contribute to their coping mechanisms,\u201d says Mich<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">elle. \u201cAnd when all is said and done, the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">community I\u2019ve found in this field is unlike any other, and there is little I can think of that brings <\/span><\/span>more satisfaction and personal joy than knowing that I\u2019ve made even one individual\u2019s life that much <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">better<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2014<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">th<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at through my work, I\u2019ve contributed to someone\u2019s capacity for resilience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span id=\"page21R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Advice for<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">S<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tudents<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">T<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">aking the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">R<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">oad<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">L<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ess<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">T<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">raveled<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">When researching and applying to law schools,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">made sure to select schools that had strong <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">international programs.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">And during her time at the Law Center, Michelle honed her reasoning, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">writing, and advocacy skills in the International Women\u2019s Human Rights Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Still,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle admits that being a public interest<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">minded law student can<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">be<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">isolating, particularly if <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">most of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">one\u2019s<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">law school peers are focused more on the traditional firm route.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cYou very much have <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to be an advocate for yourself and remain firm in your convictions and chosen career path,\u201d says <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle. \u201cIt is stressful not having the same paycheck to r<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ely on, secondary trauma takes its toll, and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">it is so challenging to feel weighed down by the burden of being tasked with helping others in such a <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">monumental way.\u201d<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">But the rewards of a human rights, public interest career can be tremendous; and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Michelle fi<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">nds joy in her work every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Her advice for students looking to embark on this path is straightforward: \u201cBe a go<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">getter.\u201d If <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">human rights work is your passion,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">she says,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cdemand excellence of yourself and those whose job it <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is to provide you with support.
