Since 2014, the Human Rights Institute has partnered with the Center to send law students as official observers to the military commissions at Guant\u00e1namo Bay, Cuba. Students leave from Andrews Air Force Base and stay in Guant\u00e1namo Bay Naval Station for one week. Students are selected from a pool of applicants, and the pool opens each year in September. The opportunity is open to 2Ls, 3Ls, and LL.M. students. Students interested in participating as an observer should reach out to Professor Todd Huntley with the Center on National Security.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, HRI Deputy Director Michelle Liu traveled to Guant\u00e1namo to observe the proceedings. \u201cObserving the hearings in person afforded me the opportunity to better understand some of the human rights allegations that have plagued the facility since its inception,\u201d said Michelle Liu. \u201cThe experiences of observing the hearings during the week, talking to defense counsel and media, and seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/09\/01\/us\/guantanamo-camp-x-ray-ghost-prison-photographs.html\">Camp X-Ray<\/a> in person\u2014albeit from afar\u2014were incredibly eye-opening and compelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more about HRI Deputy Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/human-rights-institute\/news\/4663\/\">Michelle Liu&#8217;s experience as an observer<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Guant\u00e1namo Observers Program is a joint program between the Human Rights Institute\u00a0and the Center on National Security.
