As originally planned, the proposed border wall in Hidalgo County, Texas, was to be built in part on land owned by the Diocese, leaving the historic La Lomita Chapel in the enforcement zone on the south side of the border wall, separated from the community that worships there. Legislative intervention through Congress’s 2019 appropriations bill, prompted by vigorous advocacy in support of the Diocese, has altered those plans.
