{"id":2329,"date":"2021-07-30T10:31:25","date_gmt":"2021-07-30T14:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/icap\/?page_id=2329"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:15:20","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:15:20","slug":"u-s-soccer-federation-has-obligation-to-treat-womens-and-mens-sports-equally-georgetown-laws-icap-tells-court","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/icap\/our-press-releases\/u-s-soccer-federation-has-obligation-to-treat-womens-and-mens-sports-equally-georgetown-laws-icap-tells-court\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Soccer Federation Has Obligation to Treat Women\u2019s and Men\u2019s Sports Equally, Georgetown Law\u2019s ICAP Tells Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (July 30, 2021) \u2014 The Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection (ICAP) at Georgetown University Law Center today filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/icap\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2021\/07\/2021.07.30-ICAP-USWNT-Amicus-Brief-As-FIled.pdf\">amicus brief<\/a> in support of the pay-discrimination lawsuit brought by members of the U.S. Women\u2019s National Soccer Team against their employer, the U.S. Soccer Federation.<\/p>\n<p>ICAP\u2019s amicus brief supports the women\u2019s team on appeal, explaining that the U.S. Soccer Federation, as the national governing body for soccer in the United States, is a creation of federal law with a duty to serve the public interest and an express responsibility to advance gender equality in soccer. This special quasi-public status makes it even more important that the U.S. Soccer Federation comply with federal antidiscrimination laws.<\/p>\n<p>In their lawsuit, the women\u2019s team members allege that the U.S. Soccer Federation denies them equal pay on account of their gender, in violation of the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Even though the U.S. Women\u2019s National Team is the most dominant team in international soccer history, the U.S. Soccer Federation pays the team members less than their male counterparts, both in their per-game salary and the bonus money they receive for winning games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act makes clear that the U.S. Soccer Federation is no ordinary employer,\u201d said Annie Owens, Senior Counsel at ICAP. \u201cThat law requires that national governing bodies treat women\u2019s and men\u2019s sports equally. Living up to these obligations is especially vital given that the U.S. Soccer Federation also has a statutory responsibility to represent the best of the United States on the world stage.
