{"id":87,"date":"2019-09-04T16:28:06","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T20:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/mcrp-journal\/?page_id=87"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:11:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:11:23","slug":"reframing-radical-religion","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/mcrp-journal\/in-print\/volume-11-issue-1-spring-2019\/reframing-radical-religion\/","title":{"rendered":"Reframing Radical Religion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\">INTRODUCTION<\/p>\n<p>Like a thief in the night,<sup>1<\/sup> politicians have stolen religion for their deceptive vices, using the term \u201cradicalization\u201d or \u201cterrorism\u201d to meet their needs.<sup>2<\/sup> \u00a0They have snatched the power of the church, synagogue, and mosque by framing religion as an attack on American ideals.<sup>3<\/sup> Words matter. The social constructs associated with \u201cradicalization\u201d and \u201cterrorism\u201d matter even more because the terms have been used to justify discriminatory policies and surveillance practices using the pretext of national security.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Masking government discrimination with security concerns is nothing new.
