A<\/span>S <span class=\"s1\">F<\/span>LORIDA <span class=\"s1\">G<\/span>OES<span class=\"s2\">. . .<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s3\">\u201c<\/span>What is happening in Florida?,<span class=\"s3\">\u201d <\/span>asked <i>The Chronicle of Higher Education <\/i>toward the beginning of 2023. At first blush, this question may appear easy to answer, and the <i>Chronicle<\/i>\u2019s reporters seem to have had little difficulty doing so: <span class=\"s3\">\u201c<\/span>Since the New Year,<span class=\"s3\">\u201d <\/span>they declared, <span class=\"s3\">\u201c<\/span>Gov. Ron DeSantis and his Republican allies have ramped up efforts to eradicate \u2018woke\u2019 ideology from public colleges.<span class=\"s3\">\u201d<\/span><span class=\"s4\">1 <\/span>This reply, which reads events in Florida as one skirmish within the so-called culture wars, is not wrong per se but it is far too superficial. To say only this is to fail to appreciate the underlying logic as well as the larger project that informs the state\u2019s mandates regarding what can and cannot be said in university classrooms;<span class=\"s4\">2 <\/span>the vitiation of tenure protections;<span class=\"s4\">3 <\/span>the closure of diversity, equity, and inclusion offices;<span class=\"s4\">4 <\/span>the enfeeblement of teacher unions;<span class=\"s4\">5 <\/span>the disablement of accreditation reviews;<span class=\"s4\">6 <\/span>the empowerment of governing boards and presidents in faculty appointments and dismissals;<span class=\"s1\">7 <\/span>the installation of political cronies to key leadership positions;<span class=\"s1\">8 <\/span>and the threat of substantial financial repercussions for those who refuse to succumb to these intrusions into the affairs of Florida\u2019s public institutions of higher education.<span class=\"s1\">9<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/public-policy-journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/03\/GT-GLPP240045-1.pdf\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I.
