{"id":642,"date":"2021-09-24T13:41:03","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T17:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/public-policy-journal\/?page_id=642"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:11:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:11:49","slug":"the-ethics-of-democracy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/public-policy-journal\/in-print-2\/volume-18-special-issue-2020\/the-ethics-of-democracy\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ethics of Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The fetishization of majority rule per se has numbed what should be our primary concern for the preservation of individual rights.\u00a0 If political decisions intrude upon what should be left to the choice of free individuals, it does not much matter if such tyranny is the result of one&#8217;s person&#8217;s usurpation or of a majority&#8217;s usurpation of such rights.\u00a0 While &#8220;the consent of the governed&#8221;\u2014the right of a people to cashier its political leaders\u2014is a great bulwark against tyranny, the essential question is what social and individual ethics are necessary for democracy itself to have value.
