{"id":66,"date":"2017-08-18T12:02:20","date_gmt":"2017-08-18T16:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/supreme-court-institute\/?page_id=66"},"modified":"2025-05-12T11:09:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T15:09:13","slug":"preparing-for-a-moot-court","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/supreme-court-institute\/moot-court-program\/preparing-for-a-moot-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Preparing for a Moot Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Recommended Preparation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Read a summary of the case.<\/strong> For cases granted review before the start of the current Term you can read the Supreme Court Insitute&#8217;s Term Preview Report. \u00a0For cases granted throughout the term, we recommend reviewing the information available for each case on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/\">SCOTUSblog<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read the summary of argument section of the party briefs<\/strong>, which can also be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/\">SCOTUSblog<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In cases in which the Solicitor General files an amicus brief, you should read the summary of argument section of that brief as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Maximum Preparation<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Skip the summary and read the full argument sections instead.<\/li>\n<li>Read the relevant parts of the decision under review.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>As you are reading the briefs keep in mind these basic questions:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What rule is the party being mooted urging the Court to adopt?<\/li>\n<li>What are the best three points offered in support of that rule?<\/li>\n<li>What are the three most difficult questions that the party being mooted is likely to encounter?<\/li>\n<li>And lastly, How would you answer those three questions?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To complete your preparation, be sure to discuss the case with others who are attending.
