Their interests are equally diverse, spanning issues such as privacy, children’s digital rights, social justice, and antitrust law. What unites Tech Law Scholars is a shared commitment to understanding how law and public policy can respond to the profound ways technology shapes these critical areas.

Each year, the Program selects approximately 25 incoming first-year J.D. students from across all sections, including those pursuing Curriculum B. Applicants may apply only after admission to the J.D. program, and part-time J.D. students are encouraged to apply.

Tech Law Scholars participate in two year-long seminars during their first and second years of law school. The 1L seminar introduces students to contemporary ethical, constitutional, and policy issues related to technology through sessions led by members of Georgetown’s technology law faculty. The 2L seminar focuses on the institutions and organizations that shape technology law and policy, featuring guest speakers and field trips to federal agencies, Congress, the courts, and private-sector and nonprofit organizations.

Each Scholar is paired with a faculty advisor from Georgetown’s Technology Law and Policy Faculty, who serves as a resource throughout the student’s law school career. Scholars are also invited to faculty–student lunches and a special orientation event each year.

In addition, students may participate in a peer mentoring program that connects them with Tech Law Scholars across class years and receive priority invitations to Tech Institute events.

Curricular Requirements

In order to receive the “Tech Law Scholar” designation, a student admitted to the Program must successfully complete the following academic requirements:

For Scholars admitted to the Program as entering first-year law-school students, the Tech Law Scholars Seminar I;

For all Scholars, the Tech Law Scholars Seminar II;

A minimum of one “Core Course;”

A minimum of one “Advanced Course” that satisfies the Upperclass Legal Writing Requirement identified in the JD Technology Law and Policy Curriculum Guide; and

A minimum of six additional credits in courses other than “Core Courses,” at least two, but no more than four, credits of which are in “Clinics and Practicums” or “Skills Courses.”

Applications are currently open for the 2025-2026 academic year. 1L and 1E applications are due on April 18. If you are admitted to Georgetown Law after this deadline, please email TechInstitute@georgetown.edu. Applications for rising 2L, 2E, and transfer students are due on June 30.”

Applications(This link opens in a new tab) for the 2026-2027 academic year are due April 17 for incoming 1L and 1E students and on June 26 for rising 2L, 2E, […]

["post-110","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
