Commencement 2021 FAQs
Are we having an in-person Commencement?
On April 22, 2021, President DeGioia announced that the University will host an Commencement at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on Monday, May 24, 2021 for 2021 graduating undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The ceremony for all graduate and professional students, including Law Center graduates, will take place at 5:00 p.m.
All ceremonies will be broadcast virtually for graduates, families, friends, and members of our community who are unable to attend in person.
Graduates attending the ceremony in-person are invited to bring two guests. All attendees will be expected to adhere to Washington, DC’s public health and travel guidance.
We will provide specific information on registration, seating, and other aspects of the ceremony as additional details are available. Please see the 2021 University Commencement FAQs for up to date information.
Accommodation requests should be submitted using this accommodation request form as soon as possible. A good-faith effort will be made to fulfill requests made after May 10, 2021.
Are we planning anything in-person on the Law Center campus?
We will also host Celebration Days on the Law Center campus on Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, inviting our 2021 graduates and two guests to celebrate this milestone. These events will include photo opportunities and an opportunity to walk across a stage with fellow graduates. As noted above, regalia is not required to participate, but you may wear it if you wish. More information on these events, including how to register, is coming soon.Graduates and guests do not need to be in the Georgetown COVID testing protocol to attend, but masking and social distancing will be required while on campus. We expect all participants to follow CDC and DC guidelines if traveling to DC.
Can I bring guests to the Law Center gathering or Commencement ceremony?
Graduates will be able to bring two guests to both the Celebration Days and Commencement ceremony.
Do I need to join the Georgetown protocol or provide any information to attend these events? Do my guests?
Graduates and their guests do not need to be in the Georgetown COVID testing protocol to attend both the Celebration Days! Events and Commencement ceremony, but masking and social distancing will be required on campus and at Nationals Stadium. We expect everyone to follow CDC and DC public health and travel guidelines.Being fully in the testing protocol, however, is the only way that you can participate in other on-campus activities, including reserving library study space or gym access. For comprehensive instructions on entering the testing protocol and securing a green GU360 badge, please review the Spring 2021 Checklist for details.
Do I need regalia to participate in these events?
Academic regalia is not required to participate in any events. However, if you would like to rent regalia, please follow these instructions. The deadline to order is Tuesday, April 27.
I cannot participate in any of the in-person events. What will be virtual?
We recognize that many in our community–graduates, family, and loved ones–will not be able to attend Commencement in person on May 24. The ceremony will be livestreamed, following which we will premiere a virtual Georgetown Law Graduate Recognition Ceremony.
In addition, we will host a Virtual Lecture to the Graduating Class with a Special Guest the evening of Thursday, May 20. Additional details will be shared soon.
