A Message from Dean Treanor regarding Class of 2021 Commencement
March 2, 2021
Dear Members of the Class of 2021,
Congratulations on reaching your last semester at Georgetown Law! You have accomplished so much throughout your time here – under the most difficult of circumstances – and we applaud each and every one of you on your achievements.
We are sure many of you are thinking about graduation and what it will look like this year at the Law Center. It is something that we have been working on for some time now. We have some great ideas on how to make the occasion special. And while we still have not finalized the plan, marking this milestone for the Class of 2021 is extremely important to us all.
I want to share with you some of the considerations that are figuring into the Law Center’s planning. Given the current state of the pandemic locally and nationally, we will not be able to hold a traditional Commencement ceremony, with thousands gathered together on the main campus. We are planning a robust virtual Commencement ceremony which will include addresses to the graduating class and the reading of names. In addition, the Law Center hopes to be able to bring graduates to our campus in small groups during graduation week so you can take photos on campus in regalia, mark the occasion with some peers and professors, and we hope, cross a stage while your name is announced.
Many of you have asked if guests will be able to attend in person events. Because of density restrictions and social distancing requirements, it is extremely unlikely we will be able to permit any guests to attend proceedings on our campus. We also want to avoid the need for family members to travel to Washington, given the ongoing risk of COVID-19. We deeply regret that the pandemic will preclude that cherished tradition of Commencement, but be assured we will make every effort to include loved ones virtually and ensure the graduation exercises meaningfully reflect your extraordinary accomplishments and resilience.
As to next steps, we are working with the University Public Health Working Group on this concept. I expect to share more concrete plans with you as they take shape in the coming weeks.
