{"id":10349,"date":"2017-06-13T17:15:24","date_gmt":"2017-06-13T21:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/?page_id=1344"},"modified":"2026-03-02T18:29:15","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T18:29:15","slug":"forming-a-new-student-organization","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/your-life-career\/activities-organizations\/student-organizations\/forming-a-new-student-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"Forming a New Student Organization"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Student Life and Wellness Committee (consisting of students and staff) meets to consider new student organization applications and evaluates them on an individual basis. The committee determines whether a group applying for recognition will bring value to the university community and ensures there is no duplication in purpose or name of an existing Georgetown Law student organization. Please see the Office of Student Life for more information about semester deadlines for applications. After a decision has been made, new organization applicants will be notified of the committee\u2019s decision by the Assistant Director of Student Life. The new organization is then required to attend mandatory student organization training to review policies and procedures for student organization management.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All programs and activities are open to all Georgetown University Law Center students regardless of race, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or any other characteristic protected under<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ideaa.georgetown.edu\/notice-of-non-discrimination\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> University policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or applicable law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are 2 types of student groups at the Law Center: Community Interest Groups (CIG), and student organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Student Organizations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are groups that receive semester budgets from the Student Bar Association and are authorized yearly. They tend to have at least 20+ active members, and host several events each semester. You can learn more about what student organizations the Law Center has on our webpage &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.georgetown.edu\/your-life-career\/activities-organizations\/student-organizations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Organizations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Community Interest Groups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are more fluid in nature, and the barrier to entry is much lower to allow for as many CIGs as there is student interest. CIGs are for students who are interested in gathering, but may not necessarily need rigid meetings or membership structures. CIGs are designed to be more fluid, allowing students to join the fun when it fits their schedule. Community Interest Groups have different rights and privileges than traditional student organizations as outlined below.
