Building for the Future

With consultation from Georgetown Law’s volunteer alumni boards, Dean William M. Treanor has announced plans for a new academic law building on the Law Campus. Plans call for a 200,000-square-foot structure, in order to meet longstanding needs for students and to position the Law Center to best compete with peer institutions going forward.

The building will greatly enhance the student experience. To bring it to fruition, we need your help. Georgetown Law’s global alumni body and volunteer boards have already launched an inspiring fundraising effort. With a $30 million gift to name the new building, Taiwanese businessman Daniel Tsai (L’79) has set records for the largest single gift in Georgetown Law’s history and the largest gift supporting facilities in Georgetown University’s history.

Now, alumni from the U.S. and abroad are naming spaces throughout the building — a compelling testament to the Law Center’s global reach and the new building’s support.

The building will include:

  • 16 Classrooms — with smaller sizes of 24, 50, 60, and 75 seats
  • Student Gathering Spaces — to build community and foster collaborative work
  • Clinical Programs Suite — a home for the nation’s most highly regarded legal clinics
  • 75-Seat Moot Courtroom — a modern facility befitting an award-winning student moot program
  • Convening Spaces — event rooms with cutting-edge technology and sweeping outdoor terraces

The architectural firm of the late, renowned I.M. Pei has conceived the new flagship building as a community-friendly entrance to the Law Campus. It will provide much needed instructional, study, and gathering spaces for students, while standing as an architectural landmark within the neighborhood.

Designed with a host of environmentally sustainable features, the building will feature ten outdoor terraces. Its upper floors will offer inspiring views of the U.S Capitol building.

With the Law Center anchoring Georgetown’s growing Capitol Campus, the new academic building will position Georgetown Law as an increasingly prominent center of scholarship, leadership, and service. With a growing modern presence, Georgetown Law is becoming the Law Center of the 21st Century.
