Excited to celebrate my 25th reunion at Georgetown Law!

Excited to celebrate my 25th reunion at Georgetown Law! After graduation, I stayed in Washington D.C. to pursue my passion for immigration law. I represented many individuals and families seeking humanitarian relief, family and employment benefits. After 9/11, I moved to the nonprofit space working on many legislative efforts on immigration. During this time I was teaching at American and Howard and found my passion for teaching. In 2008, I moved to State College, PA to join the faculty at Penn State Law. Currently I serve as a political appointee in the Biden Harris administration. It is an honor to serve and a privilege to celebrate with you this coming October!

Fifteen years already and it still seems like yesterday!

Fifteen years already and it still seems like yesterday! After working for more than ten years as legal counsel for the Central Bank of my country, I took over my family law firm and am now Managing Partner, also acting as a consultant for the World Bank and other big players in the financial sector. I am also a lecturer in commercial law in one of the most prestigious law schools of Beirut. On a more personal level, I got married last September and many of my fellow GULC classmates traveled from all over the world to join the party! Thank you GULC for contributing to my life path which led me to where I am today.

Since our last 5 year reunion, I have been at the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA) as Senior Litigation Counsel bringing actions against administrative agencies or defending against them on constitutional grounds.

Since our last 5 year reunion, I have been at the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA) as Senior Litigation Counsel bringing actions against administrative agencies or defending against them on constitutional grounds. I currently am counsel of record in two cases before the Supreme Court, Murthy v. Missouri (social media censorship) and Relentless v. Commerce (Chevron deference). Except to clerk in NJ, my family and I have stayed in D.C. and Virginia since graduation (Rebecca and I celebrate our 25th anniversary this year). I return to Georgetown Law with some frequency given the proximity but am hoping to see many who don't get out here often to see the transformed campus.

I stayed in D,C, for a year post graduation working for the National Wiretap Commission, and then I took the Iowa Bar and was admitted in June of 1974. I returned to my home town of Waterloo, Iowa in May of 1975 and was in private practice until 2015 there and was engaged in a trial practice that included product liability, living auto accident, medical malpractice, employment law and family law. I represented mostly plaintiffs but also did defense work in these areas. I was active in my local, and state bar associations and also in ATLA and served as the President of the then Iowa Trial Lawyers Association now Iowa Association for Justice and became a member of the honorary Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers. Outside of the office, I was active in politics and served as Democratic Chair in three election cycles which was interesting when Iowa went first in contested nominations. I have served on a number of state and local boards for ACLU, Sierra Club, UN Association, our local symphony, Rotary Club, museum and church committees. I also chair a family foundation in our area which supports education, health care, social service groups and the performing arts, I enjoy travel particularly road trips in the US and photography. I have been single since 1998 and raised a daughter and son with my now deceased former spouse under a shared placement plan which was easier as we lived three houses apart, My daughter is a music educator, performer, and composer living in Chicago with her spouse, and my son has a degree in art and lives near me and helps with dealing with the Iowa winter and summer with yard work. I have regularly attended our reunions and enjoy catching up with friends I knew while a student and also meeting classmates I didn't know while at GULC because of the size of our class.

Being admitted to Georgetown Law was a very big deal for a poor kid from a small-town with a funny name (Pompton Plains) whose parents never went to college.

Being admitted to Georgetown Law was a very big deal for a poor kid from a small-town with a funny name (Pompton Plains) whose parents never went to college. The breakup of AT&T's phone monopoly, the invention of cellular mobile telephone, and GULC all helped launch me into a long and fascinating career as a telecommunications attorney in Washington, DC. I retired from private practice as Chair of Venable law firm's Telecom Group, then was proud to serve for five years as Chief Communications and Cybersecurity Attorney for the U.S. Coast Guard at DC HQ, where I led the U.S. Delegation to the International Mobile Satellite Organization's annual maritime safety conventions. But easily my luckiest day was when I met my wife Judy, and my proudest accomplishments are our children, Jack, Jeffrey and Julianne. Being in the DC area since graduation has made it easy to keep in touch with many terrific GULC friends; they are all accomplished members of the Great Class of 1984! Looking forward to seeing everyone at our reunion. Your friend, Rick Joyce

I can't believe it has been 5 years since graduation!

I can't believe it has been 5 years since graduation! Since I graduated in May 2019 (on the hottest day in DC ever), I started my career in New York City as an International Tax Associate at PwC for two years before starting my current role in DC as an Employment, Compensation and Benefits Associate at White & Case. From a personal perspective, my wife and I have gotten engaged and married, moved from NYC to DC, welcomed to our family little Santiago in 2022, and we are waiting for another addition to the family later in September. Looking forward to the reunion weekend!

So, it's been forty years since we graduated from GULC!

So, it's been forty years since we graduated from GULC! In 1986, I married Vanessa Negron (L'86), who I met at the law school, and we moved to Tampa in 1986. We have two wonderful boys, Estevan (C'16) and Gabe (C'18) both now grown and living and working in NYC. After working for other people for a few years, we started our own firm, Cohn & Cohn, P.A. which had a great run for 18 years with Vanessa handling the transactional side and me the litigation. Our boys grew up running round our offices. In 2005, we joined Arnstein & Lehr (now Saul Ewing) until 2015 when I joined Burr Forman as a partner and Vanessa retired from the practice of law to focus on her own business. I am still a huge music fan and love to go to shows and festivals, having just returned from Jazz Fest in New Orleans.

It’s hard to believe it has been 25 years since graduation. Where to start?

It’s hard to believe it has been 25 years since graduation. Where to start? After spending the first 7 years of my career at Clifford Chance and Akin Gump, I moved to LA where I joined a boutique law firm as a partner in their corporate practice. I remained in LA for 15 years. During that time, I took time out from practice to join the faculty at USC Gould School of Law and co-found a successful ed-tech start-up. We moved back to DC with our 2 kids in 2018 where, after a stint in-house with a former client, I have launched my own firm. It has been great to be back in DC and to reconnect with both the law center (where I now teach a class every fall!) and my DC/NY GULC friends (although I of course miss seeing the California crew!)
