Mooting Experience
Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot
CTLS sends a team selected from the Fall semester cohort to compete in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot each year. The Willem C. Vis Moot is an annual international moot court competition held in Vienna, Austria. The Vis Moot is one of the most prestigious international moots in the world today, with over 300 universities participating. The Moot brings together students, academics, eminent lawyers, and law firms each year to tackle legal issues that are at the forefront of international arbitration. The Moot problem is based on an international sales contract where the applicable substantive law is the Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG), and the procedural law is that of a different arbitral institution specified each year in the problem.
The Moot consists of two phases, written and oral. In the written phase, teams are required to submit two memoranda, one for the claimant and one for the respondent. In the oral phase, each team competes against four other teams from universities all over the globe in the general rounds, with the 64 highest scoring teams moving into the knockout rounds. Two members of the team argue in each round, one taking procedural issues and the other substantive issue. The oral phase is held in Vienna. There are a range of individual and team awards for both the oral and written phases. You can learn more about the Vis Moot Court Competition on the Vis Moot website.

Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition
CTLS sends a team selected from the Spring semester cohort to compete in the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot each year. The Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot is an annual international moot court competition held in Geneva, Switzerland. The Moot Court Competition is the largest gathering of students, academics and judges around the theme of human rights in the world. The Competition is open to students around the world. The competition is organised by the Centre for Human Rights based at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, South Africa, in partnership with the Geneva Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, American University Washington College of Law, and the United Nations Human Rights Council Branch (HRCB) at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The best 10 teams from each UN region are then invited to participate in the online preliminary rounds. Teams then have to argue the two sides of the hypothetical case, representing, alternatively, both the Applicant and the Respondent before a ‘bench’ of human rights experts. The 16 best teams proceed to the in person Octofinal rounds, which is presided over by international human rights experts. The Competition is presented in English, French and in Spanish.
