The International Criminal Justice Initiative (ICJI) is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of State has granted a cost amendment for an additional $3 million in funding to ICJI’s project to advance accountability for atrocity crimes in Ukraine. These funds will allow ICJI to continue its important work assisting Ukrainian authorities in their investigations and prosecutions of atrocity crimes stemming from Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, and to continue in its lead coordinating role for the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group for Ukraine (ACA). Georgetown Law Center is implementing the only significant accountability project for Ukraine currently funded by the United States Government.

“We are grateful to the Department of State, and in particular to the Office of the Coordinator of US Assistance to Europe and Eurasia, for their continuing support to Georgetown and for the confidence they have placed in us to lead this important effort,” said Amb. (Ret.) Clint Williamson, Senior Director for International Justice at Georgetown University and the Lead Coordinator for ACA.

“Documenting, cataloguing, investigating and prosecuting atrocity crimes in the midst of an ongoing conflict is an incredibly challenging endeavor and it has required an unprecedented effort by Ukrainian authorities. These funds will allow us to extend our work assisting the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine as they investigate these crimes and build cases for prosecution that meet the highest international standards,” Williamson said. “Additionally, these funds will support Georgetown’s work coordinating the five implementing entities that comprise ACA, which itself is an unprecedented joint initiative by the governments of the United States, European Union and United Kingdom to collectively respond in real time to the need for atrocity crimes accountability, and we are honored to lead this effort.”
