Congressional Studies Program
The Congressional Studies Program provides programmatic, curricular, scholarship, networking, and career mentoring opportunities for Georgetown Law students who are interested in Congress. This one-of-a-kind program—unique to the Georgetown University Law Center—takes maximum advantage of our proximity to Capitol Hill and our unmatched network of faculty and alumni who bring a wealth of experience and connections on both sides of the aisle.
This program is intended for anyone at Georgetown Law, regardless of experience level, who is interested (or just curious) about how Congress really works. Also dubbed the “congressional pipeline project,” this program supports Georgetown Law students interested in congressional careers at every stage of their law school careers, from incoming 1L, to current 2L and 3L students, to recent JD graduates and alumni.
The Congressional Studies Program is a centralized hub for students seeking information about pursuing careers as “legislative lawyers” and taking advantage of the many opportunities Georgetown Law offers. These opportunities include classes and seminars; clinical, practicum, and experiential courses; internships and externships; research and scholarship; and post-graduate fellowships and career placements in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
With students encountering established career pathways to law firms, judicial clerkships, and executive branch honors programs, the Congressional Studies Program offers a first of its kind effort to provide students with another option—an insider’s view of careers in the Legislative Branch and the critical role that legislative lawyers play in our democracy.
The Congressional Studies Program is also intended to help Congress itself. By training the next generation of legislative lawyers at the intersection of law and politics, the program helps create a pipeline of well-trained and highly-skilled attorneys who are dedicated to helping the Legislative Branch fulfill all of its increasingly complex and critical responsibilities under the Constitution. It also ensures that when Capitol Hill turns to Georgetown Law for its legal staffing needs, our graduates are ready to start contributing effectively and efficiently on Day One.
