London Summer Program

Academic Facilities

London Summer Program classes and activities will be held at both Swan House (home of the Center for Transnational Legal Studies at 37-39 High Holborn) and Somerset House, home of King's College London's law faculty.  Activities may take place mostly at Swan House, however this may not be confirmed until later in the spring.  Both locations place students in the heart of London's legal quarter.  Students will also have privileges at the King's College Law Library between Swan House and KCL's Strand campus, on Chancery Lane.

Credit, Eligibility, and Academic Standards

The London Summer Program offers four courses. Students may register for two courses for up to 6 credits maximum. Georgetown's usual academic requirements apply for the award of credit. Georgetown uses an "A - F" grading system.

Georgetown's London Summer Program is offered as part of the curriculum of Georgetown University Law Center. It is accredited by the ABA and is open to students in good standing at ABA/AALS-accredited U.S. law schools and foreign law schools, as well as graduates of those institutions.  To be considered for admission, students must have completed foundational legal studies and thus be prepared for and capable of advanced legal studies.  Students from Europe and South America have have attended the London Summer program in the past and we hope to enroll students from a wide variety of countries in 2013.

All currently enrolled Georgetown LLMs, regardless of division or country of first law degree, may apply to enroll in the London Summer Program for a single summer prior to their graduation from Georgetown. Summer credits may be applied towards the student's current Georgetown degree on a routine basis, but prior approval is required from the Office of Graduate Programs with respect to individual courses and number of credits. Up to four credits may be applied towards the student's LLM degree. All courses taken in the London Summer Program will be included on the student's transcript and all grades earned in these courses will be included in the student's grade point average. LLM students pay the regular London Summer Program tuition and fees.

Other law schools have regularly approved transfer of Georgetown credits. However, each individual law school must determine the transferability of grades and credits earned in this program. Before applying to the program, students should contact the proper authority at their home school to ascertain if grades and/or credits will transfer. We also remind students that they must check with their registrar's office to decide how the program fits into their residency requirements.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants who attend law school at an institution where the language of instruction is not English will be required to provide proof of their English proficiency when they apply.

Applicants who have taken the TOEFL exam must provide their TOEFL score report.   The minimum score for admission to the program is 100 points on the internet-based TOEFL exam (with minimum scores of 25 in each of the four sections) or 600 on the paper-based TOEFL exam (with minimum scores of 60 in each of the three sections).

Although the TOEFL test is preferred, applicants may submit an IELTS scores in place of the TOEFL.  A minimum overall score of 7.5 on the IELTS is required, with at least 7.0 in each section of the test.

Applicants who have not taken the TOEFL or IELTS exam, must submit an essay of about 250 words in English including the following information:

  • A description of English language courses you have taken (type of courses, work load, level, length)
  • A description of any work experience in an English-speaking environment (type of work, length of work placement)
  • Details regarding any other academic or work experience conducted in English (summer school, internships, tutoring, essays written in English)

In addition, applicants without a TOEFL or IELTS score must submit a letter of reference from a faculty member at the university level indicating that, in the faculty member’s opinion, the student has sufficient English language proficiency to complete coursework in English and to write an exam in English.
