Center for Legal English
At Georgetown Law, we know one of the reasons you come to the United States to earn an LL.M. is also to improve your English. Our Legal English faculty is here to help you achieve that goal.
At Georgetown Law, we have created an innovative Legal English Program specifically designed for non-U.S. educated attorneys and law students. Full-time faculty with advanced degrees in law, linguistics, and education teach all of our classes and workshops. We are professionals whose expertise comes from having taught advanced students of English from all over the world; we know what is new and challenging for you, and we are here to help you become a better writer.
We look forward to meeting you at Georgetown Law’s Center for Legal English!
Writing Workshops
Our Center for Legal English offers Writing Workshops that familiarize you with the writing style expected in U.S. law schools. Many of our students have had their papers published in top U.S. law journals. The Center for Legal English also offers structured English in Context Workshops where students discuss complex legal and cultural topics and receive feedback from our faculty.
Credit Courses
Want more? We also offer credit courses. Our Advanced Scholarly Writing class guides you through the process of drafting a paper for one of your seminar courses. Our U.S. Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing (USLRAW) classes fulfill the legal writing requirements for the New York Bar and are designed to improve your legal writing skills. The USLRAW classes are taught by highly experienced Washington lawyers who work at the best U.S. law firms and the most influential domestic and international agencies. They bring an insider perspective on legal practice in the United States to the classroom.
Self-Study Online Courses
We also offer two online legal English courses:
- Online Legal English: Orientation to the US Legal System – Self-Study (2022-23)
