Nicole Brynn Carroll
In collaboration with her family, we have proudly dedicated the HJA Law Clinic Fund to friend and “Double Hoya”, Nicole Brynn Carroll, as a tribute to her exemplary work and dedication to the families she served through the Health Justice Alliance Law Clinic. Nicole died at age 33 from colon cancer after a brief illness.
Nicole was a longtime advocate for children with disabilities and children from low-income communities. A Girl Scout since first grade Brownies, she earned the highest honor, the Gold Award, for establishing a dance camp for girls with disabilities.
As a third-year law student, she spent an immersive semester collaborating with pediatricians and medical students as a student attorney in the HJA Law Clinic, addressing the health-harming legal needs of low-income pediatric patients of MedStar Georgetown Division of Community Pediatrics. Nicole cared deeply about her clients and worked tirelessly and zealously to address their needs holistically.
In honor of Nicole, this fund will pay for critical resources such as a night in an emergency hotel room, food to help a client feed their children, an expert assessment of a child’s special education needs, a cell phone for a client to stay in touch with their student attorney, and so much more.
Nicole fully embodied the Georgetown value of cura personalis, which encourages care and individualized attention to the holistic needs of each person. Nicole spoke of her vision for the individuals she served in her application to the clinic:
“The impact …. on the lives of … clients is so large because the solutions affect multiple areas of clients’ lives, not just their housing situation or educational experience. Next year, I hope to continue this work by working directly with clients in the Health Justice Alliance clinic to alleviate symptoms of poverty and improve health outcomes.”
Your gift will honor her legacy and directly support the families for whom Nicole advocated so passionately.
