Clare Ulmer
Clare graduated magna cum laude from the University of Chicago in 2020 with a major in Political Science and minors in Computer Science and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. Her honors thesis focused on French media portrayals of the hijab before and after the attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine offices.
After graduating, Clare worked in communications for the Project on Middle East Democracy, a small NGO focused on democracy and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa. Her interest in nationalism, citizenship, identity, and human rights, particularly in the relationship between France and North Africa, took her to France, where she spent two years teaching middle school English and volunteering at a refugee and asylum seeker aid center.
Clare is interested in immigration and human rights law. She speaks fluent French, intermediate Spanish, and basic Arabic.
