Photo of Clare UlmerClare graduated summa cum laude from the University of Chicago in 2020 with a major in Political Science and minors in Computer Science and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. Her honors thesis focused on French media portrayals of the hijab before and after the attack on the Charlie Hebdo magazine office in Paris.

After graduating, Clare worked in communications for the Project on Middle East Democracy (now Middle East Democracy Center), a small NGO focused on democracy and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa. Her interest in nationalism, citizenship, identity, and human rights, particularly in the relationship between France and North Africa, then took her to France, where she spent two years teaching middle school English and volunteering at a refugee and asylum seeker aid center.

Clare is interested in immigration, human rights, and cybersecurity law. She speaks fluent French, intermediate Spanish, and basic Arabic.
