Tech Institute Launches GAILP — Georgetown AI and the Legal Profession

November 6, 2025

The Georgetown AI and the Legal Profession (GAILP)(This link opens in a new tab) Initiative launched with a vibrant and well-attended luncheon that brought together faculty, staff, alumni, students, and friends of Georgetown Law for an engaging discussion about the future of law in the age of artificial intelligence.

Executive Director Natalie Roisman opened the program with warm welcome remarks, recognizing members of the Board of Visitors and Law Alumni Board, as well as representatives from the faculty, Alumni Affairs, Career Strategy, and the student body.

Attendees also heard brief remarks from Tech Institute Faculty Director, Professor Tanina Rostain, who discussed her teaching and work at Georgetown Law, including initiatives exploring technology’s influence on the legal field and efforts to foster innovation among students.

Attendees then viewed a video featuring remarks from Natalie, Adjunct Professor Ed Walters, Professor Paul Ohm, Professor Kristelia García, and Professor Anupam Chander, concluding with a call to action to visit the GAILP website and engage with the Initiative’s ongoing work. Adjunct Professor and Chief Strategy Officer of vLex, Ed Walters, followed with a thought-provoking exploration of the skills that remain uniquely human in legal practice and those best suited to AI. He underscored the importance of training law students not only in technology but also in judgment, counseling, and discernment—core human capacities that will define the next generation of legal professionals.

Members of the Board of Visitors and Law Alumni Board then had the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about the future of the Initiative, engaging in a lively exchange with Natalie, Ed, and Georgetown Law students in attendance.

Tech Institute Justice Fellow and recent Georgetown Law graduate Patrick Yurky next offered a short presentation highlighting his collaboration with Professor Paul Ohm on the development of a spring semester intermediate coding course. He emphasized that the future of legal practice will belong to those who can skillfully integrate AI literacy with a deep understanding of the law.

The conversation continued with contributions from members of the Board of Visitors and other attendees, who shared their insights, experiences, and curiosity about the evolving intersection of AI and legal practice. The exchange reflected the shared commitment across the Georgetown Law community to prepare students and professionals for a rapidly transforming profession.

The Tech Institute extends its sincere thanks to all who attended and contributed to this inspiring discussion. The enthusiasm and thoughtful engagement of our community—more than seventy participants in total—made this inaugural GAILP launch event a resounding success. We look forward to continuing these conversations in future sessions as we explore the profound implications of AI for the future of law.
