D.C. Neighborhood Information

Washington, DC

The city is divided into a simple grid, at the center of which stands the Capitol building. The city is primarily broken into four quadrants, each of which is further divided into lettered streets (running East-West), numbered streets (running North-South), and avenues (connecting squares and circles diagonally across town).

The Law Center is located in between Capitol Hill and Chinatown, but the following neighborhoods may also interest you (note that clicking on any of the neighborhood names will take you to a Website independent of Georgetown Law):

Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle

Located in the heart of Washington, Adams Morgan is ethnically mixed and culturally diverse, and is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and bars. Lined with elegant mansions, Dupont Circle houses some of Washington's best shopping, dining, and nightlife. Dupont Circle is also home to Washington's vibrant gay and lesbian community.

Capitol Hill/Eastern Market

Located near the United States Capitol, this neighborhood is home to many elected officials, congressional staffers, lobbyists, and journalists. The "Hill", as it is sometimes called, is a community of restored row houses and a few apartment communities. Capitol Hill is home to many restaurants, shops, and boutiques that serve area locals and tourists.

Cleveland Park/Woodley Park

Both areas are mostly residential, and located in the area surrounding the National Zoo. There is an abundance of both condominiums and rental apartments. Single family homes tend to be quite large. The Connecticut Avenue corridor is the area's main thoroughfare and provides many convenience stores, dry cleaners, professional office space, shopping and restaurants. This neighborhood also features easy access to Rock Creek Park and its park course and exercise trails

Columbia Heights/Meridian Hill

Columbia Heights is located in the northwest quadrant of Washington DC. One of DC's most ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods, Columbia Heights has an assortment of exclusive condominiums, townhomes, and public and middle income housing. Columbia Heights is a historic area rich in the arts, politics, and literature filled with various styled restaurants, shopping, museums and live performances.

Foggy Bottom

Located near Virginia's Key Bridge and adjacent to downtown D.C., this neighborhood is popular with Washington's politicos and other power players. Foggy Bottom, centered between Georgetown and downtown, is home to the State Department, World Bank, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the world famous Watergate building.

Tenleytown/Friendship Heights

Located north of Georgetown University's main campus, this upscale neighborhood is filled with embassy-sized houses, exquisite townhouses, and a limited number of luxurious apartment complexes. This area is almost exclusively residential and features large single family homes set back from tree lined streets. It is simply "the suburbs within the city." This area is near Rock Creek Park with its many nature and bike trails. Friendship Heights is home to Mazza Gallerie, a large shopping center filled with upscale department stores, health and fitness spas, and many specialty boutiques.

U Street Corridor

Largely part of the Shaw neighborhood, the U Street Corridor is located in northwest Washington DC. One of the fastest growing transitional communities in the DC metro area U Street is the home to many restaurants, nightclubs, art galleries, and music venues. A community full of Victorian-era culture; there are many row houses with the addition of many luxury condominiums in recent years. U Street is a progressive area moving towards economic and social growth and development.
