Assistant General Counsel, The Vanguard Group, Inc. At Vanguard, Professor Newman advises on a variety of regulatory, corporate and business matters, including compliance with U.S. laws and regulations governing the operations of registered investment companies, investment advisers and private funds, along with general corporate and securities law compliance.
Prior to Vanguard, Prof. Newman served as a Senior Counsel in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Investment Management, focusing on industry outreach, the issuance of regulatory guidance, and securities offering disclosures. Prof. Newman’s private sector experience includes serving as General Counsel of The Motley Fool’s Asset Management business and Vice President – Assistant Counsel for Oppenheimer Funds, Inc., a global asset management firm. Prof. Newman spent the first ten years of his career as a financial services, corporate and securities lawyer in the New York offices of Clifford Chance LLP, followed by a tenure in the Washington, D.C. and Hong Kong offices of Dechert LLP.
Prof. Newman frequently presents on financial regulatory matters at industry conferences and compliance seminars, and he is a faculty member of the Practicing Law Institute and a member of various committees of the Investment Advisers Association.
