Georgetown Law, the law firm of Baker & McKenzie, and family and friends of the late Leonard B. Terr have established a $1 million scholarship to assist students in the graduate tax program. Terr, a Baker & McKenzie partner and Law Center adjunct professor, taught tax law at Georgetown for 17 years before his death in 2015.

The scholarship will provide tuition assistance for tax LL.M. students who have demonstrated financial need, who display a commitment to pursuing a career in tax law and who embody Georgetown’s ideals of service to others.

“We deeply appreciate the extraordinary generosity of Professor Terr’s family and friends, and their commitment to the Georgetown Law graduate tax program,” said Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor. “This gift will further our goal of attracting high merit, high need students to our campus.”

The scholarship was announced at an April 28 luncheon honoring Terr with a Charles Fahy Distinguished Adjunct Professor Award for service to Georgetown Law. Terr’s wife Linda and daughters Amanda and Ashley and son Jeremy and his family attended the April 28 ceremony. His eldest daughter Jessica was unable to attend.

“Len would truly have cherished this recognition,” Linda Terr said.

Terr’s practice focused on international tax planning, transfer pricing and tax controversies, Associate Dean Nan Hunter said at the event. Prior to joining Baker & McKenzie, Terr served as international tax counsel at the U.S. Department of Treasury and headed the U.S. delegation in the negotiation of current tax treaties between the United States and Germany.

Prior to practicing law, Terr was an instructor of English at Brown University and an assistant professor of English at Wayne State University and Elmira College. He was a talented poet, Hunter said.

The first Terr scholarship will be given to an LL.M. student in the fall of 2016.
