Barbie Dolorit was born in Mexico to Cuban parents. She immigrated to the United States as a child but often visits her family in these two countries. Barbie received her BS in Literature and Political Philosophy, with a minor in Psychology, from Florida State University. During her undergraduate years, Barbie’s life was forever changed after learning about the vast cruelties animals suffer at the hands of humans, which ignited her passion for justice and advocacy. She founded VEGFSU, a student organization committed to animal advocacy, vegan lifestyle education, and supporting community efforts against state-sanctioned violence, like volunteering with Food Not Bombs. Barbie has also volunteered abroad as part of a wildlife conservation program, ensuring the safe release of baby sea turtles into the ocean.

Apart from her interest in animal rights, Barbie has always loved to write. She has published work in a peer-reviewed undergraduate research journal, revealing a neglected aspect of the Female Gothic mode: how the act of looking reflects women’s doubts about domestic confinement. Her Honors Thesis was a case study of Eminem as a politicized celebrity, filling a gap in the theory of the relationship between politics and popular media. As a legal intern for the Law Offices of Francisco Marty, she honed her strong storytelling skills by crafting persuasive mitigation letters for criminal defendants.

Barbie is now a J.D. candidate at Georgetown University Law Center, hoping to advance the rights of sentient beings through impact litigation. During her 1L summer, Barbie interned with Animal Partisan, supporting their work with legal research and strategy development. Barbie has also contributed pro bono to the Nonhuman Rights Project in support of efforts to expand legal recognition for nonhuman animals, as well as to the Chesapeake Legal Alliance. In summer 2026, Barbie will join the Animal Legal Defense Fund as a litigation fellow, continuing her commitment to public-interest advocacy on behalf of animals exploited by industrial systems. Her life goal is to open her own organization, which would advocate not just for animals, but also for the vulnerable communities impacted by animal agriculture, like immigrants, prisoners, the children trafficked into the fishing industry, and the BIPOC neighborhoods polluted through the environmental racism of agribusiness.

At Georgetown, Barbie co-founded the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund chapter to build community, mentorship, and practical opportunities for students committed to animal justice. Her academic interests include critical legal studies and the ways “neutral” legal narratives can obscure power, violence, and exclusion. She has also taken Georgetown’s Habeas Post-Conviction Practicum, which engages in high-stakes capital defense litigation. As a 3L, Barbie plans to take the Animal Law Practicum, so she can work closely with her mentor, the director of litigation at Humane World.

Barbie’s hobbies include completing seasonal puzzles, playing deception games with her friends, and dissecting literature, whether in books, essays, movies, or lyrics. Barbie shares her home with her partner and her rescued companion animals, three cats and two bunnies.
