On 26th September, from 3.30 to 5 pm, Professor Giovanni Chiarini will discuss ecocide and crimes against the environment in the war in Ukraine. Specifically, the presentation focuses on 1) what is ecocide and why it should be inserted into the ICC Rome Statute as a fifth international crime; 2) how many cases of mass environmental destruction have been committed during the war in Ukraine, and why the current legal framework of  crimes against the environment need to be amended; 3) what are the issues related to introducing ecocide at the International Criminal Law level, with special attention to some procedural weaknesses that characterize the ICC itself.
