Ethical Use of Novel HIV Data & Analytics
Co-hosted by the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH), the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, and the Georgetown Ethics Lab, this webinar will bring together a diverse group of government officials, civil society leaders, people living with HIV, and experts in big data, AI, health policy, and ethics. As HIV programs increasingly explore the use of novel digital data sources and advanced analytics — including machine learning, AI, and natural language processing — this webinar will spotlight the urgent ethical considerations that arise in leveraging such tools.

Drawing on a recent landmark report, the session will examine scenarios where data from mobile devices, social media, dating apps, and electronic medical records are used to predict HIV risk, guide service delivery, and enhance programmatic outcomes. The speakers will engage in a cross-sectoral dialogue on risks, such as privacy infringement, algorithmic bias, and civil rights violations, while also discussing concrete frameworks and recommendations to ensure responsible, community-centered innovation.
This convening will offer policymakers, researchers, public health implementers, and donors a vital opportunity to align on principles, build shared understanding, and catalyze ethical action as HIV programs enter a new era of data-driven precision.
