Private International Law in the Americas: Achievements, Challenges, and Opportunities

Location: McDonough 202
Date: October 3, 2025
Time:

The Organization of American States (OAS), through the Inter-American Juridical Committee (“IAJC”) and through a series of Inter-American Specialized Conferences on Private International Law (known by the Spanish acronym “CIDIP”), has contributed extensively to the development of Private International Law in the Americas region. Since 1975, nine CIDIPs led to the adoption of 26 inter-American instruments (including conventions, protocols, uniform documents and a model law) in a wide variety of areas.  The IAJC has explored topics as diverse as procedures for recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and electronic warehouse receipts for agricultural products.  This year marks the 50th anniversary of CIDIP, and through two panel discussions, this conference will take stock of the OAS’s achievements and consider both challenges and opportunities for further development of Private International Law in the region,  including its relationship to global international organizations working in the PIL space, such as the Hague Conference, UNCITRAL, and Unidroit.
