Second Externship Criteria
J.D. students can participate in a maximum of two externships for credit during their time at Georgetown Law.
J.D. students who want to participate in a second externship for academic credit must request permission to do so through the Externship Application. When completing the application, you will need to provide the following information:
- The name of the field placement organization where you completed your first externship for credit;
- The semester or summer session in which you completed your first externship;
- The name of your proposed, second field placement organization;
- The name of the companion seminar that you participated in during your first externship, and
- How your fieldwork in your second externship will differ SUBSTANTIVELY and SUBSTANTIALLY from the work you conducted at your first externship. Specifically:
- How will your learning goals differ?
- How will your responsibilities differ?
- How will your work be more challenging?
- What new knowledge will you acquire?
- What new skills will you develop?
Upon reaching a decision on a student’s second externship request, the student will be notified accordingly via email.
