Professor Newman Hood is Executive Vice President & General Counsel at Excelerate Energy, a publicly-traded (NYSE: EE), Houston-based company in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. She was previously general counsel of Akfel Commodities, a Singapore-based natural gas and power trading company with significant assets in Turkey. She served in the Obama administration from 2012-2016, as senior advisor to the US Special Envoy for International Energy Affairs at the State Department.
Previously, Professor Newman Hood was general counsel of London Stock Exchange-listed Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. and senior legal counsel at Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, the national oil company of Kuwait. Earlier in her career, she was an attorney at White & Case LLP in New York and Washington, where she represented governments, banks and companies on international oil and gas projects and project finance transactions. Prior to that, she served as petroleum legal advisor to the prime minister of East Timor (Timor Leste) in a position funded by the World Bank.
Professor Newman Hood has published a number of op-eds and articles on energy and legal topics, including in The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, Los Angeles Times, and China Daily. She was a Term Member (2005-2010) and is a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
