Professor Messinger is a partner at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. He works with company managers, directors and employees to identify and leverage intellectual property assets. He handles complex patent matters involving inter partes and post-grant review, reexamination, reissue and appeals. He represents and opposes patent assertion entities in a variety of contexts. He is a leader in the area of fast-track patent examination in the United States and abroad. Professor Messinger is a graduate of Duke University, B.S. Physics, with a law degree from Georgetown University. He has extensive experience prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications and developing strategic patent portfolios. Hundreds of patents he and his teams helped obtain have been successfully enforced, licensed or transferred between companies. Professor Messinger has worked with leading innovators on advancements in computer networking (Internet, World-Wide Web, Java technologies), communications protocols, browsers, geographical information systems, high-speed optical communications, optoelectronics, graphics processing, data mining, and renewable energy. Professor Messinger was a patent examiner for over six years in Group 2500 (Radiant Energy) at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He regularly publishes and speaks on emerging topics in patent strategy and practice in the United States and abroad. Professor Messinger has taught courses in Patent Office Litigation, IP Law, Patent Prosecution and Patent Drafting at the USPTO, and a local community college and law school. He also serves as Montessori-based catechist. He helped lead VA and DC area efforts on behalf of Cyprus Friendship Program, a volunteer organization that helps foster peace by bringing Cypriot teenagers together with U.S. host families.
