Meet 11 Couples Who Found Love at Georgetown Law

February 14, 2024

This Valentine’s Day, Georgetown Law is proud to celebrate 11 couples whose pursuit of their law degrees also led them to their other halves. From moot court crushes to Reunion meet-cutes, these Hoya Lawya couples prove that Georgetown Law really has a knack for playing Cupid!

Christian Hatten, L’22 and EB Hatten, L’22

Christian and EB met through the Gilbert and Sullivan Society in their first year of law school, just before the pandemic. After doing both law school and theater virtually for the next year, they finally got the chance to perform together on stage in “Legally Blonde” during their final semester. The two tied the knot in May 2023.

Maura Griffith Moffatt, C’88, L’91 and Greg Moffatt, F’81, L’91

Maura and Greg met on the very first day of law school, when college classmates of Maura’s who’d rowed for Georgetown with Greg snuck between them in the locker line and introduced them. They ended up in Section 4 and a study group together, and the rest was history. They were married the fall after graduation. They moved to Boston, where they raised two D1 athletes, including another rower! Their daughter Caroline, F’21, L’26, is now a fellow double Hoya.

Melissa Berger Stoller, L’89 and Larry Stoller, L’88

Melissa and Larry met at Georgetown Law in 1986. Larry, a 2L, spotted Melissa, a 1L, in the library during her first week of classes. According to Larry, “it was love over the Federal Reporter opinions!” Now married for almost 35 happy years, with three children, the youngest a freshman at the College, they say, “Thank you, Georgetown Law!”

Dillon Rodriguez, L’22 and Sarah Schmidt, L’22

Dillon and Sarah met in Section 4 and grew closer as they walked to the Gallery Place stop after their Civ Pro class. Their connection grew when they would make eye contact and share a smile across the Torts classroom whenever Professor Peller would share stories involving his Buick. Their favorite Georgetown memory is playing Trivia at Wundergarten with their Section 4 classmates after Wednesday Wind Down.

Mark Stabile, C’88, L’91, P’17, P’19 and Michelle Pujals, L’91

During law school, Mark and Michelle were acquaintances with several mutual friends. Fast forward to their 25-year reunion in 2016, which they both attended happily single. At the class party on Friday night, they were talking to the same group of people and were re-introduced by a mutual friend, and all had dinner together that evening. Unbeknownst to them, their friends orchestrated a plan to seat them together at the Reunion Gala the next evening and arranged for them to go out afterward (first with their friends and then the two of them, at the Dubliner, until the lights came on at 3 a.m.). The rest, as they say, is history. They married in 2019 and are looking forward to attending their 35-year reunion together!

Johnathan Ayers, L’12 and Allyn Ginn Ayers, L’12

While Johnathan maintains that they actually met during 1L orientation, Allyn and Johnathan’s first conversation was during their 3L year in the cafeteria before the Federal Courts class they were both taking. They now live in Miami, have been married for almost eight years, and are expecting their first child, a baby boy, in a few weeks!

Kenneth Anderson, L’98, L’04 and Tienne Anderson, L’01

Kenneth and Tienne had seen each other around campus but did not actually speak until they saw each other out at Republic Gardens. Although they technically met at ‘the club,’ it is their shared love of community and service, fostered at Georgetown Law, that has sustained them throughout their careers and their marriage of 18 years (and counting!).

Jarryd Anderson, L‘20 and Katherine Anderson, L’16

Jarryd and Katherine will celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary later this year. Reflecting on the unexpected beginning of their relationship, Katherine shared, “I actually crashed Jarryd’s birthday party back when I was a 3L! My friend promised there’d be over 100 people so no one would notice us ‘crashers.’ Despite it being a full party, we got introduced to one another and talked for the rest of the evening. We had mutual friends and attended the same events in the city but we had never run into each other before! Our first date was a few days later and after dinner we ended up watching the Democratic Presidential Debates — a very D.C. thing to do.”

Bryan Kennedy, C’08, L’11 and Noel Miller, L’13

Bryan and Noel first met while doing mock trial at Georgetown Law and eventually started dating, despite multiple terrible evidence-related puns sneaking into the relationship. Today, they live in Falls Church, VA with their two wonderful children and they try to get back to coaching or judging mock trials whenever they can. Absent objections, evidence-related puns continue.

Lauren Eber, L’25 and Emily Phelps, M’24

Lauren and Emily instantly bonded over their love for Jack the Bulldog and sharing class merch. Even though they reside on separate campuses at Georgetown, they have enjoyed when their affinity groups from the Law Center and the med school have joined together for events. Their favorite Georgetown memory is from their first date at the Georgetown waterfront.

Amanda Shafer Berman, L’04 & Matt Berman, L’03

Amanda and Matt met as a 1L and a 2L doing law school theater with the Georgetown Gilbert & Sullivan Society (GGSS). They dated other people in “Much Ado About Nothing,” dated each other in Chicago, and have remained together through numerous GGSS “Pirates of Penzance” productions and at least two GGSS “Urinetown” productions. On with the show!
