Curriculum to Prepare for the N.Y. Bar
Georgetown Law Center international LL.M. students can prepare for the New York Bar Exam during their LL.M. year and take sufficient credits and courses to be eligible for the exam upon graduation.
New York State recently announced new requirements for foreign lawyers who wish to sit for the New York Bar Exam upon completion of the LL.M. degree. The major new requirements, which go into effect for new LL.M. students in Fall 2012, require:
- 24 credits earned in the LL.M. degree (foreign-educated LL.M. students at Georgetown Law are required to take a minimum of 20 credits for the LL.M. and are permitted to take as many as 26), and of those,
- 12 credits must be in American law, distributed as follows:
-
- at least 2 credits in professional responsibility/legal ethics
- at least 2 credits in legal research, writing and analysis
- at least two credits in American legal studies, the American legal system or a similar course such as U.S. constitutional law or civil procedure
- a minimum of 6 credits in other subjects tested on the New York bar exam
The Georgetown Law LL.M. Program for international students already gives our students maximum flexibility to choose courses to meet their professional goals. If one of your professional goals is membership in the New York Bar, you can establish eligibility to sit for the exam during the Georgetown Law LL.M. program through courses that meet the above guidelines. We already offer many courses that meet the New York requirements and more will be added for the students enrolling in Fall 2012. These courses include:
