During his 45-year career as a real estate lawyer in Washington DC, most of it at DLA Piper, Fred Klein represented domestic and off-shore real estate investors in projects throughout the US. His clients include banks, life insurance companies, private equity funds, publicly traded real estate investment trusts, investors and developers. Fred has represented several German investment funds, in addition to Swiss, Japanese, Dutch and Italian investors, on US real estate investments, and has been involved in distressed debt purchases and sales throughout his career. Fred has represented families who own income-producing real estate and has negotiated many ground lease and air rights transactions, both in Washington DC and elsewhere.
Fred is a Fellow of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and has lectured in the real estate program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and in the business school at Georgetown University. He served twice as the general counsel of the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate.
He is a member of the Board of Regents of The Mercersburg Academy; the Board of Directors of the Children’s Law Center; and the Board of Directors of The National Theatre in Washington DC, where he also serves as general counsel.
He holds an undergraduate degree from Duke University and a JD from the University of Miami School of Law, and graduated from The Mercersburg Academy. Fred lives in Washington DC.
