Leah Bellshaw is an Attorney-Adviser in the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Legal Adviser. She currently works in the Office of Diplomatic Law and Litigation, advising on issues including the accreditation of U.S. personnel overseas and the privileges and immunities of international organizations. Leah has also served in the Office of Consular Affairs and the Office of Treaty Affairs. Prior to joining the Office of the Legal Adviser, Leah was a Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Global Criminal Justice at the Department of State, where she developed and advanced U.S. foreign policy to promote justice and accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Leah clerked at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. Before law school, she worked at the Refugee Law Project in Kampala, Uganda. She received a J.D. from Yale Law School, where she served as Managing Editor for the Yale Journal of International Law, and a B.A. in Development Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
