Joshua Orenstein has two decades of experience practicing in consumer financial law, litigation, compliance, and fintech product development. As the Head of Consumer Legal at Stripe, Inc., he helped develop new global payment products, including a new digital wallet that surpassed 200 million consumer accounts. Before joining Stripe, Professor Orenstein led PayPal’s Global Consumer Practices group, overseeing worldwide consumer protection compliance and advising on complex regulatory issues affecting consumer credit and payments products.
Professor Orenstein began his career in public service. As Senior Litigation Counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), he led major investigations and enforcement actions involving consumer protection laws, securing significant settlements with large banks and non-banks. Prior to the CFPB, he served as an enforcement attorney in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, where he prosecuted civil and criminal matters in the aftermath of the financial crisis.
Professor Orenstein earned his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his B.A. from Georgetown University, where he competed for the Georgetown Hoyas Cross Country and Track & Field teams.
