LL.M./Master of International Affairs (Sciences Po)
Georgetown Law and Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs(This link opens in a new tab) recognize the importance of preparing lawyers and policy makers to function in an increasingly globalized society. With this understanding, Georgetown University and Sciences Po worked together to create the LL.M./Master of International Affairs (M.I.A.) dual degree, a program of study that allows young lawyers to expand their backgrounds in the social sciences and to deepen their knowledge in their chosen area of law, in preparation for careers in both international affairs and law.
Program Overview
The LL.M./Master of International Affairs (M.I.A.) is a two-year dual degree program ideal for individuals who wish to combine their law studies with careers in international affairs and is open to students of any nationality. Below is the order of dual degree program study:
- Year One: Students study in Paris, France, completing two semesters of international affairs coursework at the Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs.
- Optional Summer: Students can attend the LL.M. Summer Experience(This link opens in a new tab) at Georgetown Law in Washington, D.C., a six-week summer pre-program in late-July/early-August to get a head start on their legal studies.
- Year Two: Students study in Washington, D.C., completing two semesters of legal coursework at Georgetown Law.
Completion of the two-year program results in students earning an LL.M. from Georgetown and M.I.A. from Sciences Po.

Eligibility
The LL.M./M.I.A. dual degree program is open to students who have completed their first professional law degree that satisfies academic requirements for practicing as a lawyer in the country where they studied, such as a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).
This dual degree program is ideal for individuals who wish to combine their legal studies with careers in international affairs, and is open to students of any nationality.
The language of instruction at both Georgetown Law and Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs is English. French proficiency is not required to attend Sciences Po. However, there are opportunities to learn French, or take dual degree coursework in French if students meet Sciences Po’s French language proficiency requirements.

Program Requirements
M.I.A. program requirements for dual degree students can be found on the Sciences Po M.I.A./LL.M. Dual Degree with Georgetown Law(This link opens in a new tab) page. The minimum number credits to complete for the M.I.A. degree during the first year of study at Sciences Po is 60 ECTS credits. Students will meet with their advisor at Sciences Po before classes start in order to discuss their first-year coursework. Individualized advising with Sciences Po coursework will assist students in preparing for LL.M. coursework and the program they choose at Georgetown Law.
Dual degree students have the same LL.M. program requirements and co-curricular opportunities as one-year full-time LL.M. students at Georgetown Law. Georgetown’s extensive course list and flexible LL.M. degree requirements allow students maximum freedom to design a program of study that best meets their interests and career objectives. The total number credits to complete an LL.M. degree during the second year of study at Georgetown is 24 credits for U.S.-trained students, and 20 credits for foreign-trained students. LL.M. program selection will be made after admission into the dual degree program, during the first year of study at Sciences Po. Students have the option to attend the LL.M. Summer Experience(This link opens in a new tab) in between the first-year and second-year of the dual degree program. This opportunity gives students a head start to their legal studies by earning up to 4 credits before the second year of the dual degree program begins, which may be used towards LL.M. program requirements and eligibility to sit for the New York Bar(This link opens in a new tab).
