Georgetown Law and HEC Paris(This link opens in a new tab) have established the LL.M./Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) dual degree, a unique program designed for mid-career professionals with an interdisciplinary methodology, exploring the connections that exist between business and legal practice. Students in this dual degree program benefit from the expertise and resources of two world-leading institutions to advance or pivot their career.

Program Overview

The LL.M./Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) is a two-year dual degree program ideal for mid-career professionals who wish to develop both their proficiency in business and management and their familiarity with the U.S. legal system and international law. Below is the order of dual degree program study:

  • Option 1 (September Start)
    • September – July: Students study in Paris, France, completing three terms of business and management coursework at HEC Paris.
    • August – May: Students study in Washington, D.C., completing two semesters of legal coursework at Georgetown Law.
  • Option 2 (January Start)
    • January – July: Students study in Paris, France, completing two terms of business and management coursework at HEC Paris.
    • August – May: Students study in Washington, D.C., completing two semesters of legal coursework at Georgetown Law.
    • Post-LL.M. Studies: Students return to study in Paris, France, completing their last term of business and management coursework at HEC Paris.

Completion of the two-year program results in students earning an LL.M. from Georgetown and M.B.A. from HEC Paris.

Eligibility

The LL.M./M.B.A. dual degree program is open to students who have completed their first professional law degree that satisfies academic requirements for practicing as a lawyer in the country where they studied, such as a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), and at least three years of professional working experience.

This dual degree program is ideal for mid-career professionals who wish to combine their legal studies with business management, and is open to students of any nationality.

The language of instruction at both Georgetown Law and HEC Paris is English. French proficiency is not required to attend HEC Paris, but there are opportunities to learn French to enjoy the full HEC Paris experience.

Program Requirements

M.B.A. program requirements for dual degree students can be found on the HEC Paris M.B.A. Program Learning Experience(This link opens in a new tab) and International Studies(This link opens in a new tab) pages. Intake into the M.B.A. 16-month program can occur either in September or January, but the September intake is the most ideal option for the dual degree program. All M.B.A. students follow the same HEC Paris M.B.A. core curriculum, regardless of intake and specialization. Students in the LL.M./M.B.A. dual degree program are required to fulfill three terms of M.B.A. studies, completing the whole fundamental phase and a term of the customized phase.

If students are accepted for a HEC Paris January intake, students must return to HEC Paris to complete the third term after completing their LL.M. studies at Georgetown Law, which may impact post-graduation opportunities in the United States if sponsored to study at Georgetown in F-1 or J-1 visa status.

Dual degree students have the same LL.M. program requirements and co-curricular opportunities as one-year full-time LL.M. students at Georgetown Law. Georgetown’s extensive course list and flexible LL.M. degree requirements allow students maximum freedom to design a program of study that best meets their interests and career objectives. The total number credits to complete an LL.M. degree during the second year of dual degree study at Georgetown is 24 credits for U.S.-trained students, and 20 credits for foreign-trained students.
