Small Places, Close to Home – Bearing Witness: The Praise House

Location: McCourt School of Public Policy, Room 920
Date: February 5, 2026
Time:

This year, millions of tourists will visit former plantations all across the United States. Many of these sites promote a romanticized history, burying the truth by promoting these sites of historic trauma to the public as wedding and other celebration venues.

Join HRI as we look at plantation tourism, artistic intervention, and the way that descendants are challenging the narrative of this industry. The panel will explore how the plantation landscape is remembered, interpreted, commodified, and contested in the United States today.

Date & time: February 5, 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Dinner will be provided.

Location: McCourt School of Public Policy, Room 920
