John Paliga has over two decades of experience assisting businesses and individuals with employee benefit plan issues. Currently a Member of the Appeals Board at the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), John focuses on benefit claim disputes. Prior to rejoining PBGC, John was the ERISA partner for two full-service law firms in Baltimore, Maryland, where he regularly worked with clients to rectify compliance issues (ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code), address employee benefit issues in mergers and acquisitions, and resolve ERISA disputes. Before that, John was a supervisory attorney for the PBGC, where he focused on coverage issues and ERISA/bankruptcy litigation.
John has prepared and presented in-house and outside training courses on employee benefit issues, including QDROs, fiduciary responsibilities, and tax qualification requirements. Active in the American and Maryland Bar Associations, John currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Employee Benefit Plans and Other Compensation Arrangements Group of the ABA Section of Real Property, Trust & Estate Law. He also is a Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel.
