Joshua Davenport is an Adjunct Professor of Law and teaches a seminar on Pre-Trial Intellectual Property Litigation. Professor Davenport also works in private practice at the firm Banner & Witcoff, Ltd. and represents clients in a variety of intellectual property matters, including patent prosecution, litigation, and counseling. As an electrical engineer with expertise in nuanced industries, including artificial intelligence, cellular networks, green energy, video games, finance infrastructure, carrier networking, and television broadcast systems, his practice focuses on applying the law to complex technical issues. This includes arguing many cases before the Patent Trials and Appeals Board (PTAB), where he was recognized by Managing Intellectual Property magazine among the top-50 filers in inter partes review petitions.
Professor Davenport is also a well-known leader in generative AI. He was an invited speaker by the USPTO regarding new rules on AI prior art, and has presented several CLE talks on generative AI issues, given interviews for multiple publications, served a secondment as a patent portfolio manager with a Fortune 500 company managing an extensive machine-learning portfolio, and even applied machine-learning modeling techniques outside work developing computer models as co-host of the major college football podcast College Football Nerds.
Professor Davenport earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama, and a J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law. Selected to the Order of Barristers, Professor Davenport was awarded Best Brief, Best Oral Argument, and Best Overall in the Southeastern Lefkowitz Moot Court Tournament, and advanced to the national finals as a member of the Intellectual Property Moot Court Team. Prior to law school, Professor Davenport worked as a Design Engineer for hardware and software implementations on routing devices during the transition into IPv6.
