Meredith Johnston is Deputy General Counsel of the Afghanistan War Commission. Before that, she was an Attorney-Adviser at the Department of State, where she covered a wide variety of issues, including international humanitarian law, international humanitarian rights law, and international trade law, and represented the United States at the United Nations, International Court of Justice, and other international fora. She also served as Special Counsel to the General Counsel at the Department of Defense, and Deputy Legal Adviser at the National Security Council. Before joining the government, Ms. Johnston was in private practice in Denver, Colorado and clerked for Judge Carlos F. Lucero on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. She holds a J.D. from New York University and a B.A. from Yale University.
