Professor Folsom is an experienced C-Suite executive, influential business leader, and independent board director with unique global perspective, having worked across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America. She is an internationally recognized corporate governance and compliance expert with extensive transformation and restructuring experience assisting public and private companies as well as multilateral organizations during challenging and unprecedented times.
A proud graduate of Georgetown Law, with a distinguished thirty-plus year career, Professor Folsom has served as the General Counsel for several Fortune 500 and private companies. Key corporate leadership positions have included: SVP and General Counsel at Philip Morris International; General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, SVP Government Affairs at United States Steel Corporation; EVP, General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer at ACADEMI LLC (the company formerly known as Blackwater); VP, Chief Regulatory & Compliance Officer and Deputy General Counsel at AIG; and Advisor to the CEO at FinTech start-up EqualFuture LLC. She also practiced law with three leading law firms.
Distinctive public administration roles Professor Folsom has held include: Counselor to the President & Director of Institutional Integrity at the World Bank; Private Secretary to H.M. Queen Noor of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; Special Assistant to Barbara Bush, First Lady of the United States; Advisor to the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women; Advisor to the U.S. Delegation to the U.N. World Women’s Conference in Kenya; and Chief of Staff to Maureen Reagan, Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee.
Additionally, Professor Folsom’s professional experience encompasses board service, including: Ecore International, Encyclopaedia Britannica, and Defense Metals (TSXV: DEFN); as well as previous service on the boards of AMG Critical Materials N.V. (NL: AMG); VELUXE LLC; and Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.
This interesting combination of experience enables Professor Folsom to provide her students with a nuanced perspective on the interplay between law, business and public policy, along with the complexities of corporate law in a global context. Furthermore, she is deeply committed to mentoring aspiring lawyers and is dedicated to fostering an engaging and thought-provoking academic experience at Georgetown Law.
Professor Folsom received her J.D., cum laude from Georgetown Law and her B.A. in Political Science from Duke University.
