Leading Experts to Discuss a Looming Tax War that Could Aggravate Trade Wars and Threaten the Global Economy

WASHINGTON – On Monday, Feb. 3, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Treasury Chip Harter and leading tax and trade experts will speak at “Tax & Trade Wars?” at Georgetown Law.

WHAT

While the U.S.-China trade war has driven headlines and market anxieties over the past year, another major threat to the global economy has gotten far less attention: a looming tax war. At “Tax and Trade Wars?” leading experts will discuss how the longstanding international tax regime governing multinational corporations could come apart, and the risks that various factors — including European digital service taxes (“DSTs”) and potential U.S. retaliation — pose to the broader international economic order. Chip Harter, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Treasury for International Tax Affairs, will keynote the afternoon event, presented by Georgetown Law’s graduate tax program, Georgetown Law’s Institute of International Economic Law (IIEL), and the DC Branch of the International Fiscal Association (IFA).
