U.S. Legal Writing Program for International Lawyers ruler

Georgetown Law's Center for Global Legal English announces the Summer 2008 U.S. Legal Writing Program for International Lawyers. This course will be offered to new Georgetown international LL.M. students and non-Georgetown students interested in improving their legal writing and analysis skills. At the same time, it will give students an introduction to the skills needed to study at a US law school. The course will introduce students to two specific forms of U.S. legal writing: the client letter and the client memorandum. The legal problems discussed will be about a US corporate issue. Since the focus of the course is on writing, knowledge of the law in corporate settings is not required, and all relevant legal information will be provided in the course packet. We will also analyze examples of successful client letters and memos. Students will be expected to write a professional quality client letter and a short memo. Grammatical issues will be addressed as they arise, and special attention will be given to identifying strengths and weaknesses in each student's written work.

 SCHEDULE

This is a two-week program, held from August 11-22, 2008  (Enrollment limit: 15 students). Classes will be held at the Law Center for three hours daily, Monday through Friday.  Students will be expected to write every day.  Each student will receive detailed feedback on his or her writing on a regular basis.  In addition, students should expect to spend a minimum of two hours a day writing outside of class.
