Q:  Does the Law School tape classes due to work conflicts, vacation plans, minor illness, inclement weather, bar review courses or job interviews?

A:  No.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  How are course evaluations administered?  Are they confidential?

A:  All course evaluations are anonymous/confidential.  The Office of Faculty Support administers the course evaluations after the professor/s has left the room during a designated period each semester.  No professor receives his/her evaluations until after they have turned in grades at the end of the semester.  If you have any questions about the course evaluation process, please contact the Office of Faculty Support at (202) 662-9285.

Q:  How do I get a copy of my LL.M. transcript?

A:  You should make a written request with your GOCard number or Social Security number and your signature to the Office of the Registrar by mail or fax (202) 662-9235.  There is a $5.00 fee per transcript.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  I only need to complete four more credits in order to graduate -- Do I have to pay extra for summer school?

A:   Full-time LL.M. students who have paid two consecutive semesters of full-time tuition may enroll in the immediately following Summer or Fall session at the Law Center to complete their degree requirements at no additional charge. Tuition will be charged on a per credit basis for any credits exceeding the credits required for the degree.  Part-time students are required to pay on a per-credit basis for all their courses.

Q:  When will I receive information on Commencement activities, including the election of student speakers?

A:  Information regarding Graduation/Commencement activities, including the election of student speakers, is provided to all graduating students throughout the year via the Student Affairs office.  Please contact the Office of Student Affairs at (202) 662-9292 if you have any specific questions, or visit their website.

Q:  What is the Policy for Excused Withdrawal (EW) versus Withdrawal (W) from a course after the drop/add period?

A:  Except for Graduate Seminars and a few other specified courses (see the “Note” section under the course listing in the Course Schedule), students can withdraw from a course any time up to and until the start of the final exam or the due date for the paper.  Students who withdraw from a course during the first four weeks will receive an excused withdrawal (EW) on their transcript.  Students who withdraw from a course after the first four weeks will receive a withdrawal (W) on their transcript.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  Can an LL.M. student take a class Pass/Fail?

A:  No.  The only exceptions to this rule are two courses that are mandatory pass/fail:  (1) the required USLD class for foreign-educated attorneys; and (2) the Spring 2 credit LL.M. Externship program.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  What are the rules for getting money back if I withdraw from a course?

A.  Any student wishing to withdraw from a course must provide a written request to the Office of the Registrar.  Your refund, if any, will be calculated based upon the date on the written request.  For a tuition refund schedule, please see the Bulletin

 

Q:  How many credits can I take per semester?
Q:  How many credits do I have to register for to be considered full-time?

Q:  How many credits can I take per semester?

A:  Full-time students can register for up to thirteen (13) credits per semester and part-time students can register for no more than seven (7) credits per semester.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  How many credits do I have to register for to be considered full-time?

A:  Students who register for eight (8) or more credits are considered full-time students for tuition purposes even if they are registered in the part-time program.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  How many credits do I have to register for to be considered part-time?

A:  Students who are on Financial Aid must register for a minimum of four (4) credits per semester to retain their Financial Aid eligibility.  All other students need only register for a minimum of one (1) credit to retain part-time status.  Please note that students are still required to complete their degrees within the three (3) year requirement, even if they only take one (1) credit in one of the semesters.  Extensions of your graduation date (i.e. up to two (2) years maximum) will only be granted for medical or extraordinary work-related reasons, but no extension will be granted beyond the five (5) year maximum of your matriculation date into the LL.M. program for any reason.

Q:  How many credits must I be registered for to remain eligible for Financial Aid?

A:  Full-time LL.M. students must be registered for a minimum of eight (8) credits to remain eligible for Financial Aid.  Part-time LL.M. students must be registered for a minimum of four (4) credits to remain eligible for Financial Aid.  For further information on the Financial Aid rules, please see the Office of Financial Aid website or contact them at (202) 662-9210.

Q:  How do I apply for a leave of absence?

A:  If you are in good standing, both academically and financially, you can request a leave of absence for up to one (1) academic year from the Registrar or the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs.  Please note that students requesting the leave of absence must demonstrate that they can complete the degree within the allowed period of study, counting the time on leave of absence.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  What is the maximum length of time that I can request a leave of absence?

A:  Students are ordinarily limited to a one (1) year leave of absence.  Any student requesting a leave of absence must demonstrate that they can complete the degree within the allowed period of study, counting the time on leave of absence.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  What if I need longer than a one (1) year leave of absence?

A:  LL.M. Students with ten (10) or more academic credits:  Under extraordinary medical or work-related reasons, the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs may grant a further leave of absence to an LL.M. student who has already been granted a one (1) year leave of absence, subject to the following condition.  The total leave of absence period combined with the total period of study cannot exceed the five (5) year maximum of your matriculation date into the LL.M. program for any reason.  Bulletin Link.

A:  LL.M. Students with fewer than ten (10) academic credits:  A leave of absence greater than one (1) year will not be granted to LL.M. students with fewer than ten (10) academic credits in the degree program for any reason.  Any LL.M. student with fewer than ten (10) academic credits who does not return to the program within the approved leave of absence period will be withdrawn from the program, subject to the readmission policy as stated in the Bulletin.

 

Q:  I received a grade that I am not happy with - what are my options?

Q:  I received a grade that I am not happy with - what are my options?

A:  Students should review their exam during the exam review period each semester at the Office of the Registrar, and review any exam feedback from the professor.  After taking those steps, students may want to meet with the professor to understand better their performance on the exam.  If a professor did not return your exam to the Office of the Registrar, you can contact the professor in order to review the exam with him/her.  Please note that professors can only change a grade if there has been a demonstrable clerical error in calculating the points granted during the original grading.    Bulletin Link.

Q:  I have to be out of town for work when one of my exams is scheduled?  Can I arrange an alternate exam date?

A:  No, unless the employment reason is unavoidable and extraordinary.  For further details, please see the Exam Deferral policy in the Bulletin.

Q:  I have two exams on the same day.  Can I tell the Office of the Registrar which one I want to be moved to a later date?  Can I indicate a preferred date for the moved exam?

A:  No.  The Office of the Registrar has a computer program that automatically identifies exam conflicts and reschedules the exams based upon a computer model.  You will have no choice in which exam gets moved or to what date the exam is moved.  For further details, please see the Exam Deferral policy in the Bulletin.

Q:  I need to purchase a ticket to fly home after exams.  When will the Office of the Registrar notify me of the new exam dates for exams that need to be rescheduled because of an exam conflict?

A:  If a student has an exam conflict, the student will receive notice by mail about 5-6 weeks after classes start letting them know of any rescheduled exam dates.  If a student believes that they have an exam conflict, but did not receive notice by mail, please contact the Office of the Registrar at (202) 662-9220.

 

Q:  How can I switch from one LL.M. degree to another?

Q:  How can I switch from one LL.M. degree to another?

A:  You must submit a detailed written request explaining the reasons for the transfer to Wendy Collins Perdue, the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at perdue@law.georgetown.edu.  Please note that you will not automatically receive the transfer.

Q:  I only missed the grade cut off for a Certificate program in one class -- Can an exception be made?

A:  No.

Q:  Can I participate in two Certificate programs simultaneously?

A:  No.

Q:  Do I need to be enrolled in an LL.M. degree program in order to participate in a Certificate program?

A:  Students may enroll in the Employee Benefits Certificate program without enrolling in an LL.M program.  All other Certificate programs are open only to students currently pursuing a Georgetown LL.M. degree.

Q:  Can I receive federal financial aid if I am enrolled in the Employee Benefits Certificate program without being enrolled in an LL.M. degree program?

A:  No.  Students who enroll solely in the Employee Benefits Certificate program are not eligible for federal financial aid since they are not attending a degree program; however, there are other loan sources to which they can apply.

 

Q:  How can I graduate with Honors (i.e. with Distinction)?

Q:  How can I graduate with Honors (i.e. with Distinction)?

A:  LL.M. students who graduate in the top third of the entire graduating class will graduate with Distinction.  Graduation with Distinction will appear on your diploma and transcript.  Please note that you must have completed a minimum of twenty (20) credits in the LL.M. program to be eligible for graduation with Distinction (i.e. Employee Benefits Certificate only students are not eligible).  Bulletin Link.

Q:  How can I graduate with Dean’s List?

A:  LL.M. students who graduate in the top third of their specific LL.M. degree program will graduate with the Dean’s List designation.  Dean’s List designation will be granted in the following five degree programs:  General, Individualized, International Legal Studies, Securities & Financial Regulation and Tax.  Dean’s List designation will only appear on your transcript.  Bulletin Link.

 

Q:  How can I do a Graduate Independent Research (GIR) project?

A:  LL.M. students are eligible to write one (1) GIR during their LL.M. academic program if we do not offer a graduate class related to the students’ research topic (and if a relevant JD class is unavailable during the entire academic year) provided that all other criteria and deadlines are met.  Please note that GIR projects will be RARELY granted.  Students must obtain approval of the topic from Wendy C. Perdue, the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at perdue@law.georgetown.edu.  After obtaining approval of the topic, then you should find a professor willing to supervise the GIR project. The deadlines for turning in a GIR form for the 2007-2008 academic year are as follows:  August 10, 2007 for Fall 2007 semester; December 3, 2007 for Spring 2008 semester; and May 5, 2008 for the Summer 2008 session.   Bulletin Link.

 

Q:  I am moving out of the D.C. area.  How can I complete my LL.M. degree program?

Q:  I am moving out of the D.C. area.  How can I complete my LL.M. degree program?

A:  If an LL.M. student is moving out of the DC area, and they have only four credits remaining to complete their LL.M. degree (and they have not previously taken courses outside the law school), you must contact Wendy C. Perdue, the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, at perdue@law.georgetown.edu to request prior approval of both the ABA accredited law school and the specific courses you wish to take.

Q:  How many credits am I allowed to take outside of Georgetown University Law Center and apply to my LL.M. degree program?

A:  LL.M. students are eligible to take a total of four (4) credits outside of the Law Center with prior approval.  This four (4) credit limitation includes graduate courses on main campus or graduate courses at other law schools or institutions.  Please note that permission to take graduate courses at other law schools or institutions will not be automatically granted and such law schools, institutions and courses are subject to a higher standard of review and eligibility.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  Can I take courses on the main campus?

A:  Students can take up to four (4) credits on the main campus in graduate level courses (i.e., 350-level courses or above) on a space-available basis with professor permission and Graduate Programs approval assuming the student has not transferred credits from another graduate institution.  Please note that graduate level language courses will not count toward the LL.M. degree.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  Will course grades from main campus show up on my transcript?

A:  Yes, but the grade will not be counted in the grade point average at the Law Center.  Bulletin Link.

Q:  How do I sign up for courses through the Consortium?

A:  LL.M. students who wish to register for a course through the Consortium should contact Louis Fine in the Office of the Registrar via e-mail at fine@law.georgetown.edu.  He will need the course name, course number, and day & time of meeting.  There are a number of steps to register for Consortium courses, so please register early in order to enroll in the courses available.  Please note that it is your responsibility to keep track of the courses that you take outside of the Law Center, including Consortium courses, in order to remain within the four (4) credit limit.

Q:  How can I take a course at another law school?

A:  If you wish to take a course at another law school and you have not reached the four (4) credit maximum for credits taken outside of the Law Center, you should contact Wendy Collins Perdue, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at perdue@law.georgetown.edu to request prior approval of both the ABA accredited law school and the specific courses you wish to take.

 

Q:  Can I obtain credit for an externship that is not on the approved LL.M. Externship Program list?
Q:  Can I obtain credit for an externship with an organization on the approved LL.M. Externship Program list if I contact them separately to arrange the externship?

Q:  If I am a foreign LL.M. student on any kind of Visa, can I do an internship/externship with any organization in the DC area?

A:  Please see the Visa Regulation website, or contact Indira Marin Dingledine, the Law Center's Visa Coordinator at 202/662-9319 or img4@law.georgetown.edu.

Q:  Can an S.J.D. student participate in the LL.M. Credit Externship Program?

A:  No.  The LL.M. Credit Externship Program is limited to current LL.M. students only.
