In 2023, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for the first time formally recognized every childโ€™s human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. This groundbreaking document set out steps that all countries party to the UN childrenโ€™s rights treaty must take to uphold that right.

The fact that the United States has failed to ratify the treaty hasnโ€™t stopped HRIโ€™s practicum partner, Our Childrenโ€™s Trust, from leveraging this growing consensus to make the right to a healthy climate a reality in the lives of children, here in the US and around the world. Late last year, in a landmark case brought on behalf of sixteen young and indigenous people, the Montana Supreme Court ruled that children have a state constitutional right to โ€œa clean and healthful environment.โ€

If you want to be part of leveraging this innovative strategy to protect the climate, join us for an information session to learn about our plans for this yearโ€™s Human Rights Advocacy in Action Practicum. You will meet the practicum faculty, hear what itโ€™s like to be a student advocate, and learn how to apply for a spot in the 2025โ€“2026 class.

No prior experience in human rights, strategic litigation, or climate justice is required. Any interested upper class J.D. student or LL.M. student may attend and/or apply.
