The Business Law Scholars program at Georgetown Law has been critical to preparing me for my legal career. I had the most incredible 1L summer job working in-house at a global tech company called HubSpot, and I have BLS to thank for that! HubSpot was not even on my radar until BLS shared the job posting. I was a Legal Intern on the Corporate, Risk, & Compliance team, and my work involved corporate governance matters, preparing materials for the company’s Board of Directors, SEC compliance, and enterprise risk management. HubSpot’s Chief Legal Officer is a Georgetown Law alum, and throughout the internship, I had multiple opportunities to learn directly from her, which included connecting 1:1 as well as with my fellow legal interns. I loved working in-house and experiencing how lawyers contribute to driving forward the goals of a business! Read more.

The Business Law Scholar program absolutely transformed my law school experience. It offered me the best of both worlds: a small-school feel within the country’s largest law school. More than that, it provided me with a unique perspective on how the knowledge and skills developed through a legal education can drive success in business. Read more.

The BLS program really gave me a leg up in starting my career. Not only did it provide me with a network of similarly motivated friends but it also allowed me to learn skills that set me apart from other law firm associates. After participating in the program, it is easy to talk to bankers and financial analysts which has already proved invaluable. Read more.

Cohort 2, Associate, GrayRobinson, P.a.

The BLS program was hands down the most valuable experience I had at GULC. As a non-business major in undergrad, the mini-MBA course served as a great introductory exposure to various financial concepts that I now use on a regular basis as a transactional attorney. And without the mandated tax courses, I would’ve never discovered how much I like tax law (so much so that I went ahead and got an LL.M.). Not only that, but the program provided an excellent opportunity to get close with members of my cohort — all of whom I anticipate will one day be highly regarded business leaders — and many of whom I might not have otherwise interacted with but for the program. All in all, I can’t speak highly enough about the BLS program. Read more.

Associate, DLA Piper

At DLA Piper and many other big law firms, the leverage on each deal (i.e. the ratio of partners to associates) has dropped significantly over the past few years. For me, this has meant that I am one of two associates on a deal (a senior associate and me), and sometimes on smaller deals it is just a partner and me. There is also a tremendous and daunting learning curve for corporate work (which I think is undersold in law school), and the BLS Curriculum was so sufficiently comprehensive that I have been able to “hit the ground running” and get right to work on my assignments without spending hours researching on Google. It’s helped with the quality of my work product, but just as critically, it’s prevented me from feeling totally discouraged or overwhelmed . I have been on several deals so far, and already I have recognized material and used knowledge I’ve gained in every single class in the curriculum. Read more.
